Do we need a day to show our love to mothers?

This was one of ad in Times of India, Chennai Edition. Is this the way we are supposed to thank our mother? Just wondering how can people be so mean?

When i opened my facebook account yesterday and today it was filled with mother's day wishes (though they knew their mothers are never going to read it, but to get those "Likes" from friends), glory songs of mothers, old photographs, brunches and dinners for mother......... 

Common friends!! were we waiting for this 2nd Sunday of May to show our special love to our mother??

I strongly believe by these actions we are belittling our Janani's (one who gave you janmam) sacrifice and love

 

The story of mother's day itself is quite interesting. It was created by Anna Jarvis, around 100 years ago for world to honour mothers. It is in 2nd Sunday of May because her beloved mother died on that day.

 

 Jarvis wanted us to show our mothers how much their devotion and sacrifice matters, how we esteem the “truth, purity and broad charity of mother love.” She expected us to do it with simple gestures — in her opinion, a single white carnation (flower) and a heartfelt letter were best. 

 

She tried her efforts for almost a decade and finally got it declared by then President of USA Woodrow Wilson as a national holiday in 1914. But things got changed in way which she even didn't dreamt in her wildest dreams. It was taken up by business people to make it a harvest like the ad shown above.

Anna Jarvis realized what she has created has gone out of her hands and desperately tried to stop commercialisation of mother's day. She was even once arrested for the charges of disrupting peace in one of her attempts. She spent her entire wealth and life fighting against the day she had created. She finally died in an mental hospital - penniless, never married and never gave birth. Irony is that her hospital bills were paid by a greeting card company.

So friends, please understand that we are doing 180 deg opposite of what was supposed to be. Today everything is commercialised; but does that mean we thank our mother is such a way? All of us understand that her love and sacrifice is priceless. We should not be waiting for a day to express our love to her and most importantly no idiot should tell us how to love our mother.

Slow download speeds while using torrents

Hi Friends,

Not sure whether you are getting maximum speed while downloading using torrents?

Just go through the following:

1. If you are having downloading speeds of around 60-70% of your bandwidth, it can be assumed that downloads are ok. you are uploading also at the same time while you are downloading.


2. If you have a 2 mbps line, you should be downloading at speeds around 1.5 mbps.


3. There is a slight confusion in the download speeds. normaly, the bandwidth are given in Mbps. ie mega bits per second and while you download the speeds are shown in KBps ie kilo bytes per second. the equation is 8 bit = 1 byte. so in a 2Mbps line if you are getting 170 KBps, it is quite ok, ideal being 256 kBps. i.e. you will not get 2 MBps in a 2 Mbps line as 2 Mbps = 2048 /8 KBps = 256 KBps


4. Further check your firewall. you have to forward your ports used for torrent downloads to firewall to get maximum speeds. Firewall can be of two types, one can be in your computer itself which you might have installed for security purposes. Other can be the firewall in your modem, if you are using an dsl line for internet.
5. Firewall in modem? this needs a little delibration. In an adsl modem you can connect to internet in two ways

(a) PPPoE mode: In simple words, this is the mode in which you don't give a username and password to computer to connect to internet. This is done by your modem. For browsing internet all you have to do is to switch on the modem.

(b) Bridge mode: In this mode, every time you have to connect to net you have to give a username and password in your computer after switching on the modem.

1. There is a firewall activated by default in PPPoE mode. This adds to your safety. For having maximum speed in torrent downloads you have to tell the firewall about the port that you will be using for downloading torrents so that the traffic through that port is made free. Ports can be thought like a tv channel. in a tv you have lot of channels. similarly, your computer also makes use of ports for communicating.
2. In bridge mode, all the ports are open by default. you just have to tell the firewall in your computer which ports you will be using for torrent downloads.
3. The act of telling firewall about the ports to be made free is called "port forwarding". How to do port forwarding will be covered later.

You have a presentation to be given and you need a video. You have located the video in youtube and want to download it. Sadly, you can view it in your browser but cannot download it. Is there any way out?

Well, if you search in internet you will probably find some sites saying paste the URL and get the video downloaded. You try it, but its not working.

I have a solution that works 100%. I use Mozilla Firefox for browsing. I love firefox. It is 100 times better than Microsoft Internet explorer. I strongly recommend firefox. believe me you will also love it.

After installing firefox go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
here, you will find an addon to firefox called video downloadhelper.

click 'Add to firefox' to install that. its hardly few kBs. That's it you are now ready to download streaming video content from any websites.

Once you install this you can see three balloons black and white in tool strip of firefox. See the encirled portion of the image given below

As soon as there is a video streaming in your browser, this balloons changes to colour and starts rotating. This indicates that the video being played can be downloaded. Click on the drop down menu near the balloons and you are asked where to save the downloaded video. Give the location. That's it. You are done. Sit back and relax while video download helper downloads the video for you.

What's more: The magic is not over. when the balloon is black and white and you will be presented all the sites from which you can download videos using the download helper. And for those among you who are searching for adult content- there is a check-box in the bottom of the results window of download helper. just select that and see the result for yourself.

Torrent Downloads

For most of you this will be a simple thing. But this is for people who are not aware of torrents.

Torrents are peer-to-peer sharing protocol used to transfer files of different sizes.

In HTTP protocol a dedicated server is required to host a file to offer it for download. i.e dedicated hardware and bandwidth is required. But in torrents this is over come.

Let us take an example. Suppose i have a video to share. I make a torrent and leave the file for upload for a minimum time. Let us assume 4 others downloaded this video and after that i stopped uploading it. Now this 4 will continue to upload it as long as they wish (maybe, when there is free bandwidth available). Thus say, 16 people download and they continue to upload. This chain keeps on going. Thus the availability of that video is ensured even though the creator is no longer uploading the original file. This is in short what torrent download means. Here the money charged to you for hosting a server is saved and you can download for free.

How to:
1. To download from torrent first you need a torrent client. There are many available for free. uTorrent, vuze, flashget etc. I am using vuze now. See screen shot. It has got a pleasing interface. and it gives me good speed also. you can download it from here:

2. Once you have installed a torrent client. you can visit torrent sites and download torrents. Some of the sites are

www. isohunt.com
www.piratebay.org
www.sumotorrent.com
www.majaa.net (for indian especially south indian. you will need to register in this site)
go to any of these sites and search for the item you are looking for.

3. Once you find the required item, download that torrent. Open this torrent in the torrent client (vuze in my case) and click the start downloading. That's it you are done. Very soon you will have your favourite movie, song, application or game downloaded. When you search for a torrent if you see more than one, select the one with seeders/leechers(peers) ratio is maximum

seeder: person who has the complete copy of the file u r about to download.
peer: person who is downloading along with you. he is uploading at the same time, but he cannot give you the full file.

Netiquette: Once you downloaded, don't stop. you should seed to a fair amount. i.e if you downloaded 100mb file, you should upload at least 100mb. This will ensure that the torrent will be alive and others also can download.
